Mobile & Wireless Roundup No. 138

Welcome to the 138th edition of this newsletter. This newsletter began nearly three years ago. Over time, I have refined the process of producing it so that it is not too time-consuming and can be turned around quickly, even with many other things on my plate.

One of the ongoing frustrations with LinkedIn is its limited search functionality. Even when I know I have written about a topic previously, finding that content can be surprisingly difficult. These challenges are even more pronounced when it comes to newsletters. While it is fairly straightforward for readers to discover and subscribe to the newsletter, as the author, I have little visibility into who my subscribers are or what content resonates most with them.

Several other limitations have emerged over time. For example, LinkedIn no longer sends the full content of newsletters via email, which is inconvenient for those who prefer reading it that way. There is no option for authors to choose whether the full text or just a preview is emailed. Nor are there detailed analytics beyond basic impressions and reactions. I cannot see which links were clicked or which sections readers spent the most time on.

Another shortcoming is the lack of formatting flexibility. While LinkedIn supports basic rich text, there are limitations when embedding images, linking to external media, or structuring long-form content in more engaging ways. There is also no integration with external tools or platforms, meaning I cannot easily connect subscriber data with my own mailing list or website analytics.

Notifications are another pain point. Subscribers are not always notified when a new edition is published, and some report that newsletter updates get lost among the general stream of LinkedIn alerts. From a content creator’s perspective, there is also no way to schedule posts in advance, collaborate with co-authors, or easily repurpose newsletter content across other platforms.

Despite these limitations, I do appreciate how LinkedIn enables quick and simple newsletter creation within a platform that many of you already use professionally. However, the constraints mentioned above have led me to adopt an email-first strategy going forward. From now on, email subscribers will receive the newsletter before it is posted on LinkedIn.
